Marching Band/Concert Band (Full year) 2nd semester is enrollment in Concert Band The successful marching program at BCHS involves the students as a performing unit prior to the beginning of the school year. Rehearsal begins in the summer and a band camp is held two weeks prior to the opening of school. Rehearsals continue during the regularly scheduled class time and on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons until the third week of October. This organization performs at home football games and at numerous marching competitions throughout their 8-week season. The marching band activity at Bear Creek H.S. has evolved from football entertainment to a performance organization exploring music and emotion with sound, color and movement. From the onset of their high school career, band students enter the high school community with an instant family. Band students have fun, work hard, and elicit pride in their school and in their organization. Members of this ensemble have an opportunity to audition for All-County Festival, All-State Band, Solo and Ensemble Festival and other honor performing groups.

Percussion Class (Full year)  The percussion class is a part of the marching ensemble first semester (see description above) and the concert band second semester. Percussionists must attend all after school rehearsals and performances ( see marching band description). The percussion class will rehearse during the school day with percussionists only, focusing on proper technique, balance, blend and timing. After school rehearsals during the marching season are with the full ensemble; wind players, percussion and color guard. At the conclusion of the 8-week marching season, the percussion class will focus on percussion ensemble literature as well as traditional wind band music. Members of this ensemble have an opportunity to audition for All-County Festival, All-State Band, Solo and Ensemble Festival and other honor performing groups.

String Orchestra (Full year) The orchestra members at BCHS are a hard working group of young musicians who perform several concerts throughout the school year. Members of this ensemble have an opportunity to audition for All-County Festival, All-State Orchestra, Solo and Ensemble Festival and other honor performing groups. Instrumentation is limited to violin, viola, cello or string bass.

Jazz Band (Full year) Entrance into this ensemble is done by audition in late March. The jazz band performs at several concerts during the school year, participates in area contests and festivals and performs for special community events. Students in the jazz band must be members of the marching/concert band or have special permission for enrollment. Members of this ensemble have an opportunity to audition for All-County Jazz Band, All-State Jazz Band, Solo and Ensemble Festival and other honor performing groups. Enrollment is limited to the following instrumentation: saxophones, trombones, trumpets, piano, bass guitar or string bass, guitar, percussion.

Beginning Guitar (Full year) - This ensemble is designed for guitar students who are interested in learning to read music and for students who have never played guitar. Advanced guitarists must have prior approval to register for this class. Students must be willing and able to work independently in this environment. Focus will be on note reading, rhythm reading, scales and the blues.

Music Theory (Semester course) This is a course for the advanced, serious musician. Music theory will cover the following topics; rhythm and note reading, scales and modes, chord structure and intervals, musical form, non-harmonic tones and cadences. Each of these topics will be covered and applied to music composition. Students will create their own compositions and will use music technology to aid in their composition.

What to Look For in a Private Teacher

A good high school private teacher should be work with your child on the following concepts:
  • All 12 Major scales - and when more advanced - all forms of minor scales
  • Chromatic scales
  • Etudes specific to the instrument (not just working on music from band or orchestra)
  • Ensemble pieces (they should play duets with their students)
  • Sight reading
  • Alternate fingerings/concepts - which would allow students to perform music smoothly
  • Music theory
  • Embouchure work and range training exercises
